What Home Means to Me…
I am very fortunate to be taking part in Victoria of SFgirlbybay’s endeavor called Pin it Forward. We lucky bloggers are trying out a new (and in my experience thus far, fabulous) tool called Pininterest. It’s insanely easy to use and makes it easy to ‘tag’ the internet, storing reference images and ideas with only a click or two. It’s the visual person’s Delicious and I’m loving it.
So, the project was to create a pin board titled ‘What Home Means to Me’. 10 bloggers a day for 30 days will post their inspirations on Pininterest and a little synopsis of their thoughts on their blogs - so here goes!
Firstly, and fore-mostly, home is where my boys are. One big and handsome, one small and adorable. My family always moved around a lot growing up so I learned early on that home wasn’t a place, it is wherever my circle of people, the ones who love and look after one another, happen to be pitching their tents that particular day.
So, once I have my people firmly in tow what is the next best aspect of ‘home’ that I yearn for? A place with stellar bookshelves and big big windows so that my books and plants can be at home too! And of course plenty of nooks and crannies to house my assorted bits of homey fluff and thrifty treasures (ideally this includes an over-flowing fruit/veggie bowl and the glorious granny chic spice cabinets my Handsome Big Boy and I found on one of our first ‘couple’ garage sale excursions.
Of course I wouldn’t complain if my little abode and it’s fillings happened to reside within walking distance (I’ll settle for a reasonable drive!) of the ocean… Nothing beats stepping out of my car after a long day at work and finding that the seabreeze is on the air and greeting me at my front door.
And my receiver, turntable and sweet sound system are probably crucial as well.
And my drafting table and art supplies.
And if I get started down one path with my drafting table and art supplies you know it won’t be long until I need my amazing olive green (50lb) sewing machine (it was my mom’s first!) AND my carefully curated collection of fabrics.
And a hot glue gun.
And some Earl Gray tea. With a touch of lemon. To sip while I contemplate my next step now that table, supplies, machine, fabric and glue gun are now in order…
And the art. Ohhhh the art. HBB and I are both illustrators and designers and I have been collecting original art and prints from friends in college, artisans on street corners in Europe and anywhere else I happen upon something beautiful, unique and handmade. I love to be surrounded by the work of our friends, families and one another as much as I love to support other craftspeople. Which might have something to do with my small Etsy addiction… but, as my bumper sticker says, Buy Art!
There’s a little round up of the people and things I like to surround myself with - I hope you enjoyed this little sneak peak! Thanks to Jenny of The Story so Far for her introduction and be sure to visit Shannon of What’s Up Whimsy! tomorrow for the next installment of What Home Means to Me. You can follow all of the Pin it Forward pinboards right here and check the schedule to see who else is pinning today!
And of course don’t forget to take a look at mine :)
